The venom of Phoenix’s words burn deep in my soul as my eyes lock on his storming eyes. I’m fucked. In so many damned ways, I am completely screwed. How could I have been so naïve to think that he didn’t remember me or our lustful moments together? A cheap wig and pounds of makeup were never going to be enough to hide the primal connection that we made cloaked in thrilling desire in that dark corner.

As his grip on my wrist slightly loosens, I snarl only one word, “Fine.”

I stiffen my spine, but it’s all for show right now. I feel as small as I ever have in my entire life. Maybe Da is right. Maybe I am as useless as he makes me feel. Fuck all of this to hell. How can I be so weak when it comes to this man? I don’t let anyone have this kind of control over me, but I am putty in Phoenix’s hands right now.

That money. Dammit, I wanted to surprise him with a huge and unexpected score from my meeting with Easton that would be sure to cripple our rival family, but instead, I’ve dug myself into a trench so deep, I don’t know how the hell I’ll climb out. If Phoenix outs me to the Brannick family, if he cripples my plans, Da will be finished with me for sure. All because I got greedy and stole those euros! And then fucking admitted it because he has me in such a twist, I don’t even recognize myself.

Rage bubbles up again, making my jaw clench as I continue the staring contest with my professor, who has just become enemy number one in my book. And I am sure that I am his now too.

“Now be the good little pet that you are and tell Char that you’re not feeling well. Reschedule your study session. We have a much more important date with my fucking money right now,” Phoenix growls low in my ear.

Snatching my arm back, rubbing my palm over the burning skin that is still on fire from his grasp, I turn to see Charlotte bounding in our direction.

“Fancy seeing you here, Phoenix,” she twitters, tilting her head to the side, making her long blonde locks roll over her shoulder.

Phoenix’s entire body language changes instantly. He’s not hard, callous, irate. He’s soft, kind, caring.

He points to the coffee stand only yards away from us. “Best java in the entire city. You know how much I crave that sweet treat every day.”

Charlotte starts laughing instantly. “The more frou-frou the better, right?”

“Something like that.” Phoenix rubs the back of his head, eye fucking me hard—and not in the good way. “And I got to chat with my student again on the way, which is just the icing on the cake. But I am worried that she’s a little under the weather.” Phoenix cocks his head, sending a sweet but concerned smile over my way. Damn, he’s a good actor.

Clearing my throat, I turn to Charlotte.
